Physical Education
Head of Department - Miss E Morton emorton@prsbucks.comOur PE intent:
To inspire and develop competent, knowledgeable lifelong learners that lead happy and healthy lifestyles.
Physical Education plays a pivotal role in students’ mental, social and physical wellbeing. Here at Princes Risborough School, we are committed to ensuring each student has a well-rounded PE curriculum. Through high-quality core PE lessons, we are deliberately building the necessary conceptual understanding and practical competencies that allow students to confidently select and excel in our BTEC Sport qualification, preparing them for their chosen next steps. Students engage in two hours of PE per week, with the expectation that they also attend extra-curricular clubs and competitions at every available opportunity. We believe that it is our role to ensure that we broaden experiences so our students develop a love for physical activity, fostering the desire to continue enjoying exercise and activity independently, competently and knowledgeably, in order to live an active and healthy lifestyle, now and in their futures.Curriculum and Development
The PRS Physical Education curriculum is designed to be progressive and comprehensive, allowing all students to develop their understanding and proficiency across a wide range of team and individual activities. We ensure consistent progression and place strong emphasis on personal development and achievement for every individual. Students will experience a holistic approach to physical education, setting them up to make healthy lifestyle choices well beyond their time at school.
Facilities and Opportunities
Our students benefit from fantastic on-site facilities, enabling the department to offer a wide range of activities both in the curriculum and during extra-curricular hours:
- Indoor Facilities: A five-badminton court sports hall (equipped with indoor cricket nets), a dedicated fitness suite, and a dance studio.
- Outdoor Facilities: Tennis and netball courts, as well as picturesque field space accommodating four football pitches, one rugby pitch, and an artificial cricket wicket.
Students at PRS are given many opportunities to represent their school in a wide variety of sporting activities. They do so with pride, achieving a great deal of success at the district, county, and national levels.
Community Impact
We are proud to have formed strong and extensive partnerships within our local community. These links provide our students with the essential opportunities they need to further develop their talents, improve their health and well-being, and form positive relationships outside of school hours. The success of this approach is evidenced by the many former PRS students we welcome back to use our sports facilities as engaged community members.

KS3
In Years 7, 8, and 9, all students benefit from two dedicated hours of Physical Education each week. Our Key Stage 3 curriculum is specifically designed to empower students to make confident, informed choices about their future studies. This foundation prepares them for Year 9, where they can choose to pursue the Level 2 BTEC Sport qualification. Crucially, every student is provided with a fitness booklet within their lessons, offering a valuable overview for both students and parents regarding their current health and fitness awareness and attainment.

KS4
In Years 10 and 11, all students continue to participate in two hours of core Physical Education (PE) per week. Students seeking a vocational pathway often choose the BTEC Tech Award in Sport, dedicating an additional five hours over the two-week timetable. Full details regarding the BTEC curriculum are available at the bottom of this page and on the Pearson website.
During their core PE lessons, students are empowered to choose between two pathways: the Active Group or the Competitive Group. This choice allows students to self-direct their learning environment, ensuring they feel the most comfortable and confident, thereby supporting optimal personal progression
KS5
We provide the Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate, Diploma, and Extended Diploma in Sport. These options offer the flexibility for students to study a varied range of subjects or to intensely specialise in a sport-focused curriculum. Our students consistently achieve high levels of success and are well-prepared for progression to excellent further education establishments and rewarding careers in sport and leisure. A key component of our courses is the opportunity to gain real-world coaching experience by supporting PE lessons and running extracurricular clubs
